Accessibility Statement
Our House Points · Last updated October 7, 2026
Our commitment
Every student, teacher and family should be able to take part in house points. We build Our House Points to be usable by people with disabilities, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, switch devices or screen magnification, and people who are sensitive to motion.
The standard we work to
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA across the app, the hallway display and this website. It is the standard named in the U.S. Department of Justice's 2024 rule under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act for the web content of public schools and districts.
What we do today
- Readable color. Every text color in our design system is chosen to reach a contrast of at least 4.5:1 against its background. Color is never the only signal: every house is named in words wherever its color appears.
- Easy to tap. Buttons and controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels, and automated tests check this on phone and desktop screen sizes before every release.
- Keyboard friendly. Controls are real buttons, links and form fields, so they can be reached and used from a keyboard, and they show a visible focus outline.
- Works with screen readers. Points awarded, undo messages and other updates are announced as they happen. Images that carry meaning have text descriptions, and every page declares its language.
- Respects reduced motion. If your device asks for less motion, our animations stop, including the hallway display's swaying banners and this website's slideshows.
- Light and dark. The admin screens follow your device's light or dark setting, and you can switch it yourself.
Known limitations
- The hallway display is a visual scoreboard, made to be read on a TV from across a room. The same standings are always available in the app's Leaderboard, which works with screen readers.
- Student photos that a school uploads don't have their own descriptions; the student's name is always shown beside the photo instead.
- We have not yet had an independent WCAG 2.1 AA audit. It is next on our list, and we will post a summary of the results on this page.
